The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway on a stamp to celebrate its first 100 years
The early 1900s, characterised by considerable industrial ferment, inspired the mayors of the region to create a new line linking Locarno with Domodossola, through the Centovalli and the Vigezzo Valley. Thanks to their generous efforts, they succeeded in turning the dream into reality: the railway was opened on 25 November 1923.
The narrow-gauge line is a masterpiece of civil engineering, which still today blends well with the enchanting nature of the two valleys. Getting on board the trains of the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway means living a unique experience in contact with a varied territory, in a succession of deep gorges, wild mountains, rivers and waterfalls. 52 km of route, 2 nations, 83 bridges and 31 tunnels to discover in just under two hours.
One hundred years later, the spectacular railway line is preparing to celebrate its first century of life. The inaugural event on Saturday 25 November 2023 marked the official start of the celebrations, which will include events and initiatives throughout 2024.
