The 100 years of the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway as told by the Centovalli and Pedemonte Regional Museum!
In view of the importance of the Locarno-Domodossola railway line for the area to which it refers, the Museo Regionale delle Centovalli e del Pedemonte is taking part in the jubilee with an exhibition dedicated to the history of Centovallina.
The exhibition develops on two axes. The main one proposes a “journey” between the two terminuses through about fifty photographs taken in the 1980s by Cavigliano photographer Fredo Meyerhenn. The images, which are mostly unpublished, focus on the details of a line which, partly because of its cross-border nature, has a history full of anecdotes and experiences to which most people in the region are attached.
In a final exhibition space, the exhibition finally takes us back to more distant times, focusing on the life and work of the builders of the line. The pre-Alpine territory that the railway crosses is impervious and has put a strain on the engineers and the many workers who, over the course of almost ten years, have built bridges, tunnels, cut rocks and reclaimed land so that the tracks can connect the two cities at the terminals. This last part of the exhibition, a hundred years later, is intended to be a tribute to the determination and hard work of these men.
